Patricia Arquette and Thomas Jane Divorced

This weekend Hollywood is the land of the free as divorces are finalized (Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds) and filed (Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger).

Yet another rocky marriage is now over, this one between two TV stars: The divorce between Patricia Arquette (star of CBS' 'The Medium') and Thomas Jane (HBO's 'Hung') was finally finalized by a Los Angeles court on Friday.

Arquette -- previously married to Nicolas Cage -- first tried calling it quits on her husband when she filed for divorce citing "irreconcilable differences" back in 2009, but she withdrew her petition as the couple attempted to reunite. When they separated again last year, they resumed plans to divorce.

The actors wed in Italy in 2006, and have an 8-year-old daughter together named Harlow. Arquette, 43, and Jane, 42, will share joint custody of their child, according to a TMZ report.

Candace Johnson, Angel Investor, Launches Satellites and Startups

Candace Johnson (Flickr/Frank Boyd)This is an article written by Jennifer L. Schenker, a veteran journalist who has been covering technology in Europe for 25 years, writing for publications such as the Wall Street Journal Europe, Time Magazine, the International Herald Tribune and BusinessWeek. She currently runs Informilo an on-line magazine about the global tech sector.

Candace Johnson, an American who helped pioneer the satellite industry on the Continent, was dubbed ?The Satellady? in a 1996 Economist article. A career as a trailblazer also earned her a few other labels: she was called ?the most dangerous woman in Europe? by an angry media mogul after she foiled his plans to build a cartel and ?Enemy No. 1? by Germany?s Deutsche Telekom when she won a landmark case against the company for illegal subsidies of data networks.

Johnson says she has earned all of these titles over the course of a 35- year career in the tech industry by ?always trying to create something new? and usually breaking monopolies in the process.

?What I am really most proud of is that I made SES (Societe Europeene des Satellites) become the world's largest satellite system at the time and the premier satellite system today and that I was able to create other companies, all of which contributed to the advancement and democratization of access totelecoms, media and Internet for the world,? says Johnson.

Johnson is now playing a big role in investing in Europe?s start-ups, arguing that if Europe wants to ensure its economic prosperity everyone is going to have to do its part to keep young entrepreneurs from moving elsewhere. To that end, she is president of Johnson Paradigm Ventures (JPV) which is a principal founding shareholder with AXA, Caisse des Depots, Bayerische Landesbank, and the SPEF of Sophia Euro Lab, Europe?s first trans-border early-stage investment company based in Sophia Antipolis. JPV is also a principal founding shareholder in London-based Ariadne Capital, headed by Julie Meyer.

Building innovative infrastructure that democratizes new types of services remains her core mission. Through her global investing activity started ten years ago, Johnson, now 58, has widened her scope of expertise to include clean tech and med tech and has been actively involved in financing such companies as the Blue H Group, which operates deep-water off-shore wind farms, Nheolis, a home-turbine energy company, and CertiNergy, France?s first B2B2C energy-credit trading company as well as Quotient Diagnostic and AboDiag, life-sciences technology and services companies.

Johnson is one of some 80-plus scheduled speakers at DLDWomen, a conference in Munich June 29-30 organized by Burda Media. The conference, which focuses on women?s influence on developments in technology, media and markets, is expected to attract 500 women in business and the arts.

The speakers, who include top female executives at companies such as Google, HP and IBM, haven?t just climbed corporate ladders, they have honed their skills by doing everything from bicycling across Siberia to driving solar-powered race cars through the Australian Outback.

Career of Candace Johnson

Johnson?s path has taken more than a few interesting turns of its own. After growing up in Hawaii and graduating from Punahou, the same Honolulu high school later attended by U.S. Present Barak Obama, Johnson went on to earn five degrees in music, includinga bachelors degree from Vassar College and masters degrees with honors from France?s Sorbonne and Stanford Universities.Through an early job as a producer at a U.S. classical music station, she met her husband, Adrien Meisch, a classical pianist and diplomat 23 years her senior, who was then serving as Luxembourg?s ambassador to the U.S. (The two celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary this year.)

From the start Johnson had no intention of becoming a demure tea-serving ambassador?s wife. While still in her 20s she joined a small broadcasting business, created a satellite distribution network for them and sold it within a year for several million dollars, earning a commission equal to three years salary. So when Meisch was posted back to Europe in 1982 and the prime minister?s chauffeur took her on the tour of the Grand Duchy, Johnson started thinking about how she could help the country she would soon call home, which was in the middle of a steel crisis.

Never one to think small, she proposed that Luxembourg launch its own satellite and made good on her promise to make it happen. Johnson used the broadcasting company commission to work without pay, concentrating all of her time on putting together a group of private investors to fund Astra, the first privately owned European television satellite and SES as well as obtaining the frequencies, putting a management team in place, and negotiating with the satellite and launch companies. Later, while on the board, she architected and implemented SES Global. Today, SES is Luxembourg?s largest taxpayer.

The satellite business was a natural one for Johnson. Her father, General Johnny Johnson, was the head of telecommunicaitons for the U.S. armed forces and ran telecoms policy in the White House under Presidents Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson and later, at age 57, was recruited by venerable Silicon Valley venture firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers to help select and then manage interesting communication start-ups.

There was not only talk about satellites at the Johnson family dinner table. Architects of the Internet such as Vint Cerf were regular guests, says Johnson. Her father also taught her how to have a head for busienss. When, as a little girl, she told her farther she wanted to run for class president, he told her she would need a marketing plan and taught her how to design one. Anytime she wanted to do a project he would tell her to create a business plan and again, showed her how it was done. So, for Johnson, entering the tech business didn't require any special training in engineering or bsuiness. But it did require moxie.

Johnson is credited with helping Astra flourish by fighting a lonely battle on SES' board to block Europe's biggest broadcasters from taking over the company and suppressing smaller, new channels - a role that earned her the "most dangerous woman in Europe" title.

Seventeen years after she started SES in 1983 an 15 years after it was actually incorporated as a company she stayed with SES on the board to help build it to be not only number one in Europe but also to architect and implement a plan for SES Global, thus creating the world's largest satellite system at the time.

?It took an amazing effort to make SES Global happen since there was much internal opposition and once I pushed it through everyone was so mad at me,? says Johnson. ?I had to fight for five years to get all my efforts recognized and it was for this that the Grand Duke and the Prime Minister gave me the Commander of the Luxembourg Order of Merit after they had already given me the Officer of the Couronne de Chene for having started SES.?

Creating ASTRA also frightened politicians and companies alike. Recently, when Johnson saw Hans-Dietrich Genscher, Germany?s legendary former foreign minister, she says his first remark in seeing her after 10 years was that the late Francois Mitterand, France?s President from 1981 to 1995, complained to him that she was ?selling Europe?s skies to America.? Johnson retorted, ?No, as you can see with SES Global I made Europe?s skies global, something Mitterand and the industrial policies of all European governments could never do.?

Johnson also started a venture to use satellites to buest telecom monopolies in Europe, launchign Teleport Europe in 1990. Within 18 months it became Europe's biggest independent private trans-border satellite communications network. Johnson convinced some of Europe's biggest companies to invest, including Germany's RWE and Vebacom.

The investors asked her to come and run the company. "I told them I am not going to work for you - I am going to sit at the shareholder's table with you," JOhsnon recalls. This took some doing as making a physical person rather than a company a shareholder in such a venture, was highly unusual, but Johnson stuck by her guns and was given a 1% share. When Loral, a subidiary of Orion Network systems, an international satellite communications provider, announced it wanted to buy Teleport Europe, RWE and Vebacom agreed by Johnson refused to sell. She continues to own 1% of the company, which is now known as Loral Skynet.

Johnson?s next high profile venture was Europe Online. The vision, in 1993, was to do just that ? to get Europe online by pioneering the delivery mechanisms that would enable Europeans to receive Internet-based interactive entertainment via their PCs and televisions. Johnson patented the digital delivery of content via satellite but gave her idea to a consortium that included Burda Media, AT&T, Pearson, Matra and a group of Luxembourg banks. The company morphed into a content play and ultimately failed. Johnson says she learned a lot from her experience with Europe Online (she bought back the name at an auction and still owns the URL) ?When you are an entrepreneur you have to implement your idea at the beginning ? you can not expect others to do it for you,? she says.

Johnson remains an integral part of the Internet and communications sectors and is a fervent promoter of women in these businesses. She is a founder of the Global Telecom Women?s Network (GTWN), which will celebrate its 20th anniversary in March 2012. Still going strong, she and her colleagues at GTWN hosted a breakfast at the Mobile World Congress last February that attracted some of the industry?s highest flying female executives, including Qualcomm Executive Vice President Peggy Johnson and Xin Fanfei, vice president and executive director of China Mobile.

As thanks for decades of effort, Johnson has been decorated not only in Luxembourg but also as an Officer of the German Bundesverdienst Kreuz 1. Klasse for her work in de-regulation, innovation, privatization, and globalization at Astra, Teleport Europe and Iridium, (she helped that global satellite company obtain its global frequencies and country codes while serving as it vice president worldwide) and for the creation of the VATM, Germany?s private telecom operator?s assocation.

Johnson is the second recipient ever of the UN-sponsored World Teleport Associations? ?Founders Award? and received the ?Lifetime Achievement Award? along with Vinton Cerf and Tim Berners Lee from the World Communication Awards in 2002.

That?s not all. In 2006, she created the Festival of the Fourth Dimension, the world?s first festival of the Arts, Technology, and Sciences, which has since become a major French government global initiative for Industrial Innovation and Creativity (Pole ICI) of which she is the first vice-president, the President being a French government official

In her personal capacity, Johnson is a member of the Supervisory Boards of Paris-based Iris Capital and Turkey?s Inovent; a founding member and former president of the Board of the Sophia Business Angels in Sophia Antipolis, France; and founding president of three multi-million Euro investment vehicles, Succs Europe, Croissance Europe and Innovation Europe, together with Meeschaert Gestion Prive. Johnson has also been instrumental in the creation of the Galata Business Angels in Turkey, the Luxembourg Business Angels and most recently, the Cologne Business Angels. She is a foundering member of all three groups.

Johnson is also a member of the board of governors of EDHEC, France?s largest business school, the University of Haifa in Israel, Sabanci University in Istanbul, Turkey, and a Senior Enterprise Fellow for the University of Essex in England, working together with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) to bring entrepreneurship around the world.

Her advice to other women? ?Choosing something that makes you go beyond yourself is exciting and allows you to reach new horizons,? she says. ? Spoken like a true Satallady.

O'Dowd Faked Dog Bites At Auditions

1 hour ago | WENN | See recent WENN news

Bridesmaids star Chris O'Dowd ensured his early auditions were memorable by pretending he had been attacked by a dog just before walking into his auditions.

The Irish actor admits he was overlooked by casting bosses at the start of his career until he developed his pooch ploy and became unforgettable.

He tells U.K. talk show host Graham Norton, "I wasn't a very natural casting for anything. I'd come out of drama school. Everybody comes out of drama school around the same time so London is suddenly scattered with thousands of actors. I asked a guy for advice and he said, 'You're going to go on loads of meetings with directors and producers. Make sure that they remember you.'

"I decided from there on in I was going to go into every meeting with a casting director or a producer and pretend that I had just been bitten by a dog. So I would be at the door, and I would (say), 'Oh f**k! Hey, I'm Chris! Did you see the Cocker Spaniel downstairs?' I would pretend I just got bitten. The story would get more and more complicated, like, 'He was holding a baby's rattle, I tried to pull it out! He looked so friendly but he bit me!'"

But O'Dowd admits he eventually had to give up his routine, adding, "I did this for four months in every meeting I went into until I went into one meeting and did it. They went, 'That's so weird because the last time you were here, you'd been bitten!'"

Antoine Fuqua and Eminem Look to Pair Up for Boxing Drama

Filed under:

From The Los Angeles Times

As recently as last month, ?Training Day? director Antoine Fuqua was slated to direct a biopic about the life of Tupac Shakur. Now 24 Frames has learned that the director has stepped away from that film and is instead poised to join a movie that revolves around a different hip-hop artist: Eminem.

Fuqua is set to come aboard ?Southpaw,? a fictional boxing drama written and conceived by ?Sons of Anarchy? creator Kurt Sutter and starring the Detroit rapper, said a source briefed on the film who requested anonymity because he wasn?t authorized to speak about it publicly. The DreamWorks film aims to shoot later this year. Fuqua has no formal deal in place as yet. [Update, 6:52 p.m.: A person close to Fuqua said the two still must work out a number of deal points.]

A studio spokeswoman declined comment.

The project?s progress is good news for fans of Eminem, who received acclaim for his turn as a talented rapper in 2002?s ?8 Mile? but has not taken a lead movie part since. The man born Marshall Mathers does have a propensity for working with top-tier filmmakers: ?8 Mile? was directed by Curtis Hanson, and Eminem also appeared in this year?s well-regarded Chrysler Super Bowl spot, which was helmed by decorated music-video director Samuel Bayer.

Maria Shriver Files for Divorce

It's Independence Day for Maria Shriver, who filed for divorce on Friday in Los Angeles from Arnold Schwarzenegger after 25 years of marriage. Her divorce petition cites "irreconcilable differences."

According to multiple reports, there is no prenup.

The news comes six weeks after the former California governor, 63, publicly acknowledged that he fathered a child with a housekeeper. Mildred Baena retired in January after 20 years working for the family.

The power couple allegedly separated when Shriver, 55, moved out of their Brentwood, Calif., mansion upon learning about the paternity of Baena's son, who was born in 1997, days before the birth of Shriver and Schwarzenegger's youngest son, Christopher. In May, Schwarzenegger apologized in a statement: "There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused."

Of the couple's four children, two (Katherine and Christina) are now adults. Shriver will likely agree to share custody of Christopher, 13, and Patrick, 17, with her soon-to-be ex.

The Austrian-born movie star and the American broadcast journalist -- who met in 1977 and married in a 1986 Catholic wedding in Massachusetts -- remain on speaking terms, according to TMZ sources, and expect an amicable division of assets.

They allegedly plan to split hundreds of millions of dollars jointly earned during the marriage. TMZ estimates Schwarzenegger's worth at approximately $300 million and Shriver's at $100 million. The divorce will not go to trial if the couple agrees to settle out of court quietly, and details of the final property settlement will likely be confidential.

Shriver, an Emmy and Peabody award winner, was spotted overseas last week in Athens, Greece, greeting Special Olympics athletes with a smile. She flew there to speak at the dedication of a statue of her late mother, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, who founded the Special Olympic Games.

William Bradley: A Shifting Republican Party Makes Mischief for Obama on Libya

The politics of war are endlessly fascinating. Especially as they concern the party which set itself up as the party of "Long War" after 9/11.

Republican politicians are beginning to follow their voters as their voters shift away in recent months from their staunch backing for the war in Afghanistan. But Republican pols are driving their voters against the Libyan War, even though the cost and exposure are minuscule in comparison.

The net effect for Barack Obama is real trouble, as he finds popular support for both the Afghan War and the Libyan War has plummeted. Even though most Democratic voters still support his far more limited mission working with European and Arab allies in Libya, it's the newfound opposition from Republicans that accounts for his Libya operation now being opposed by a national plurality.

Republican members of Congress, joining with some left-liberals, are making trouble for President Barack Obama on Libya.

Now new Republican Senator Ron Johnson is stalling a Senate vote next week in favor of authorizing Obama's Libyan mission.

It's just the latest example of how Republican politicians, especially in the House, have joined much of the Democratic left in attacking Obama on Libya.

Some three months after the United Nations sanctioned the Libyan War to protect civilians and rebels and push back against longtime dictator Moammar Gaddafi, support for the effort in the US has moved from positive to negative.

A Gallup Poll last week shows that a 47-37 edge in favor in March has shifted to 39-46 opposed in June.

The good news for the Obama Administration is that this is a low-intensity conflict from an American standpoint, with the US having shifted to a backseat role after the first week-and-a-half of hostilities.

Which is, paradoxically, one of the reasons why the war is now unpopular. Without the oomph of what The Economist calls "the U.S. cavalry," the Europeans who wanted the war are struggling to mount an effective effort.

But the UN aims have been achieved, despite the big picture impasse. Which is nonetheless slowly turning against Gaddafi.

Ironically, it may be sheer partisan politics that drives this polling result.

Most Democratic voters favor the Libyan War, though many activists and politicians are vehemently opposed. Independents have moved somewhat against, due to the fact that Gaddafi is still around and it's still going on.

Democrats favored Obama's move on Libya, 51-34 in March, and 54-35 in late June.

It's the big Republican shift against the Libyan War, driven by Republican politicians using it to attack Obama -- frequently criticizing him for not doing more as well as for doing too much -- that accounts for the turnaround in national opinion.

The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Libyan dictator Moammar Gaddafi and two of his closest associates for crimes against humanity.

Americans are more likely to say they disapprove than approve of the U.S. military action in Libya. That represents a shift from three months ago, just after the mission began, when approval exceeded disapproval. ...

Democrats are the only political group to show more support for than opposition to the U.S. involvement. Independents are the most likely to show opposition, with a majority disapproving.

Republicans' opinions have changed the most since March, moving to 39% approval from 57%. This likely reflects increased criticism of the mission's legality and cost from some Republican congressional leaders and presidential candidates. Independents' views have become slightly more negative over the last three months, while Democrats' opinions have been largely stable. ...

Last week's highly political moves against Obama in the House on Libya resulted in a wash. The House did not provide its imprimatur for the US mission in Libya. With left-liberal Democrats upset and right-wing Republicans looking for a way to slap the president, legislation to authorize the mission for the next year was overwhelmingly defeated.

But anti-war forces failed to pass a bill to cut funding for the Libyan mission. That's the real question. Of course, even if they had, they would have to get the Senate to go along with them, and that would not happen.

This week the Senate took up Libya in hearings. 2004 Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry and 2008 Republican presidential nominee John McCain moved legislation supporting the intervention, which cleared the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on a 14 to 5 vote.

Not surprisingly, the Libyan government has rejected arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court for Gaddafi, his son, and his intelligence chief on charges of crimes against humanity.

That's the bill the Wisconsin Republican Senator Johnson is stalling, using Senate procedure. Which means that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will have to hold a procedural vote first to the clear the way for the vote on the authorization.

Meanwhile, in Libya itself, the regime has rejected arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court for longtime dictator Moammar Gaddafi, his son and protege Seif al-Islam Gaddafi, and the regime's intelligence chief. They are charged with multiple crimes against humanity for their attacks on peaceful protesters during the early days of pro-democracy demonstrations in Libya, and for their attacks on civilians later during the uprising.

The ICC is using these arrest warrants as examples of what can happen to more Gaddafi associates if they don't help hasten the Brother Leader from power.

While Republican voters have dramatically shifted against Obama's Libyan operation, and are shifting away from support for the Afghan War, what they've shifted to so far is a state of confusion. Which accounts for the contradictory things Republican presidential candidates have been saying.

A new Gallup Poll finds widespread support for Obama's plan to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

But only a 43% plurality backs his specific near-term plan of withdrawing 10,000 by the end of this year, and another 23,000 by the end of summer 2012.

That's because 29% want him to withdraw more troops in the near term. And 19% want him to withdraw fewer.

The fact that only a fifth of the country thinks that Obama is being too aggressive in his withdrawal plans accounts for the movement among Republican presidential candidates, who are sounding much more dovish than they did a year ago.

The slight majority of Democrats, 57%, say the 30,000 figure is about right; however -- in line with vocal criticism of the plan from Rep. Nancy Pelosi and other congressional Democrats who want a more aggressive drawdown -- 30% call it too low.

Independents' reactions are more closely divided: 40% call it about right, 33% too low, and 18% too high. Republicans are the most fractured of all, with about a third saying the withdrawal figure is about right, a third calling it too high, and 20% too low. ...

All these things seemed so much simpler for Republicans during the first Bush/Cheney term. The USA would roll in, kick ass, and move on to the next objective.

But the world is far more complicated than that.

Maria Shriver files for divorce from Arnold Schwarzenegger

Maria Shriver ended her 25-year marriage to Arnold Schwarzenegger after he admitted to fathering a child with the family's housekeeper.

LOS ANGELES - Maria Shriver won't be back.

The Kennedy heiress filed divorce papers Friday afternoon citing "irreconcilable differences" with her two-timing "Terminator" hubby Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Shriver, 55, is asking for joint custody of the couple's two teen sons, Christopher, 13, and Patrick, 17.

The date of the their separation isn't listed, but the former Governor and First Lady of California publicly announced their split in early May - one week before the bombshell report he fathered a secret love child with the family's longtime housekeeper Mildred Baena.

Married 25 years, the Hollywood power couple does not have a pre-nup, TMZ.com reported.

Their combined worth is estimated around $300 million.

Shriver, who traveled to Greece for the recent Special Olympics there, still listed herself as a "wife" on her Twitter account late Friday.

Schwarzenegger, 63, has shelved his movie projects and kept a low profile since admitting paternity of the 13-year-old boy born to his maid just one week after the birth of his youngest son with Shriver.

"There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused," he said in a statement in May. "I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry."

Kevin Modesti: Optimal Mexicanness at the Rose Bowl

LAST weekend, 93,000 soccer fans went to the Rose Bowl to see the national teams of the United States and Mexico compete. Most rooted for Mexico.

Mexico won a lively game. Mexico's players were given gold medals as campeones of a continental tournament. On the way out, people sang "Cielito Lindo." Many enjoyed Mexican bacon-wrapped hot dogs and churros from parking-lot vendors.

For some folks, this was entirely too much Mexico.

Pat Buchanan wrote that the Mexico fans' "contempt" for the U.S. anthem and team showed how even if they are U.S. citizens, they "are not truly Americans" and "maybe they should go back." U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard expressed anger that the post-match medal ceremony was conducted almost all in Spanish, calling it "humiliating" to his team. No doubt Buchanan and Howard were speaking the language of some who fear Southern California is being taken over by foreign culture and words.

I was at the game, and I'm here to say - in plain English - Buchanan and Howard got it wrong.

First, Buchanan. I always wondered where he draws his inspiration. I'm pleasantly surprised to learn he bases his opinions on hazy interpretations of Los Angeles Times sports columns. The Times' Bill Plaschke wrote that the pre-game U.S. national anthem "was filled with the blowing of air

horns and the bouncing of beach balls."

But standing in section 3, I had a totally different impression, as did other every other American I spoke with. Amid a few air-horn blasts, the fans clad in Mexico's green jerseys showed overwhelming respect for the U.S. anthem and flag. They saved their boos for the U.S. soccer team, a very different thing.

Many Latinos cheered for the U.S. The next day, a Mexican native who has lived in Los Angeles since the 1960s began our chat about the game by saying pointedly: "My country lost."

Now, Howard. His emotion was understandable, since he'd spent key parts of the game on his hands and knees at the feet of tiny goal-scorers. The event was a reminder to the 32-year-old New Jersey native, who plays for a club in England's rampantly popular Premier League, of his sport's modest stature in this country.

But from my seat, the medal ceremony being conducted mostly (not entirely) in Spanish was appropriate. Mexico won, and the tournament featured mostly Spanish-speaking nations. And the U.S. wasn't the home team, Pasadena being merely the long-planned site of the tournament final.

Seeing this soccer game as an example of the rising toll of immigration - illegal and legal - Buchanan concluded: "Say goodbye to Los Angeles. Say goodbye to California."

Well, apparently some people sit around calculating precisely what amount of Mexicanness is optimal at one time in one place, and they like to speak up when there's too much (or, let's imagine, too little).

This was a hugely Mexican event, made so by Mexico fans wanting tickets to a soccer game more than U.S. fans.

But when I went home, I did not find my books had been translated into Spanish. On TV, Lucy still made fun of Ricky's accent, not the other way around. If I had a burrito for lunch the next day, it was by choice.

An evening of good soccer meant "goodbye" to the culture we know?

Ay, ay, ay, ay.

In English: You gotta be kidding me.

Deborah Moskovitch: Midlife Divorce: Blame it on Your Parents?

Your parents' divorce might be setting the stage for your own.

Shannon*, a 48 year old client of mine, recently explained her "aha" moment when discussing the issues behind her impending divorce. She married her husband because he "completed" her -- masking low self-esteem and feelings of not being worthy of love.

It wasn't until after therapy and introspection that she realized she had fallen into a relationship trap: Trying to fill a void of lost love left by her parents' divorce, and the loss of a relationship with her mother, when she was just 5 years old.

Seeking a rescue, not a relationship?

Shannon considered her husband a real catch. She thought her knight in shining armor cared about her every move. He guided her through life, managed the finances and left all aspects of parenting to her.

In fact, this perfect partner repeated the patterns and disillusionments experienced in childhood. Shannon experienced controlling and emotionally abusive behavior, jealousy and an uninvolved husband. She felt this was ok: She'd grown up fearing abandonment and deflecting anger from her stepmother.

You see, when Shannon's parents divorced, her mother left, with what seemed like no concern for her (the truth revealed many years later in adulthood when she regained a relationship with her mother); her father remarried, but this union did not provide her with the love and nurturing she so desperately needed. What happened in childhood then, has a significant impact on how romantic relationships are handled now, as an adult.

Although many children are resilient, and grow up thinking of themselves as just regular kids, not children of divorce, there are some children who are impacted emotionally in the long term. When a parent abandons a child, that child often believes that there was something wrong with him--or herself--and carries this belief into adulthood.

While the lack of a relationship with a parent can have a significant impact on romantic relationships for a child later in life, there is a debate amongst researchers on this topic. Some say, these individuals are affected for life. Others feel that with work, an individual can learn to come to terms with it, heal and develop rich and successful romantic partnerships.

According to Dr. Michelle Mitcham, a professor of counseling and a divorce expert, an individual's self esteem is affected because they feel rejected. The loss of the parental relationship due to divorce results in a lack of trust.

"People have different cognitions [beliefs], and this leaves certain behaviors. If your cognition is on some level, I'm a bad person, or I'm not worthy, or at some level there is something that you think you did to deserve it, the lines get blurred. What messages are you giving yourself, even if they are subliminal?"

Dr. Mitcham helps her patients regain their self-esteem and trust, so that they are able to develop a positive outlook, and healthy romantic relationships. She helps her patients cope with the loss of a parent or a fragmented relationship with the parent, and to heal by working on these 5 significant messages.

1. Look to your family of origin for answers.

It is important to resolve any issues that could be playing out in your relationship and are undermining it. For instance, people get into a relationship looking for things that they were missing growing up. If the relationship looks attractive, individuals may leap into it hoping for nurturing and love for themselves without taking the time to really get to know the other person. Slow down and get to know prospective partners.

2. Stop repeating the same relationship mistakes.

People often marry, or get into a relationship for all the wrong reasons. They are looking to feel complete, because they haven't resolved things in the past. Many times, they don't feel that they are worthy. Then they find themselves in an unfulfilling relationship, not really sure why they are giving into that relationship. Figure out what you are looking for, and love yourself -- you are worthy of love and respect, and worthy of a healthy relationship.

3. You don't have to be less of who you are to be in a good relationship.

Write out the ideal relationship: What you need in someone that you are compatible with. You'll know that you are leaning towards a good relationship when you don't have to be less of who you are in that relationship. You have to feel complete and feel like you have to stand on your own two feet before you can be happy in that relationship. The other person doesn't complete you because they are not the answer to your unresolved issues.

4. Normalize your feelings.

Uncover your issues and find out what you didn't receive growing up. Then you can fix it and move forward, because you understand the why, and how this changes your reactions. Remember you're not alone: Other people feel this way too.

5. Develop introspection and understanding.

You might want to work with a therapist or do some journaling to help you think through the issues, and what you need to do to fix them. Bottom line is you need to know that you are worthy of love and worthy of a nurturing relationship, and figure out what exactly that looks like to you.?

If you rush into a relationship without understanding where you were, then you won't know where you are going. Take time to understand what you have been through and why. There is hard work that needs to be done. While you may have lost a close loving relationship with a parent, you need to come to terms with that, and develop a loving relationship with yourself.

When you move in a positive direction from what you are used to, you very likely will feel some anxiety. Embrace it. It may sound clichd but it's true: You have to truly love yourself, before you can really love someone else.

Vinny Quits Jersey Shore, Leaves The House For Good!

And it seems like it's for real this time!

Vinny Guadagnino left the Jersey Shore house after getting a fight with another cast member and then complaining of "being homesick."

The cast just arrived back at the Shore to film season 5 after spending some time in Florence shooting the fourth season.

Vinny had apparently threatened to leave the house a few days ago because he was feeling "burned out," but cast members convinced him to stay. After the argument though, looks like Vinny had enough and quit the show. He's now at home with his family in Staten Island.

Let's hope he's pulling a Sammi Sweetheart and decides to come back after a few days. The cast was rushed into filming the fifth season immediately after coming back from Italy so we get why Vinny needed a break. But, what would MVP be without their "V"??

Emma Watson Covers Harper's Bazaar UK August 2011

Gracing the front page of numerous publications, Emma Watson adorns the cover of the August 2011 issue of Harper's Bazaar UK.

Set to hit newsstands on July 7th, the Hermione Granger actress posed in Emilio Pucci and Yves Saint Laurent for the Alexi Lubomirski shot spread while chatting with the magazine about fashion and getting "angry" while acting.

Highlights from Miss Watson's Harper's Bazaar UK interview are as follows:

On fashion: "It can be savage and cruel, in that it's prescriptive -- you have to look a certain way and fit a certain mould -- but also in the way it's made."

On visiting Dhaka for her People Tree clothing collection: "When I went out to Bangladesh, to a factory where the clothes are made [for mass-market labels], it was horrifying. There is a cost to cheap clothes -- if people could see the inhumane way they're made, they would never in a million years buy them..."

On bringing out anger while filming her roles: ??My acting tutor said the hardest thing for me was to get angry. I almost broke down in tears when they tried to get me to be angry. I said, ?I can?t do it, I just can?t do it.? I keep all of that really bottled up somewhere and I feel unleashing it would be the scariest thing ? and to let myself be powerful, sexy, all those things, it?s scary for me. [Even playing the bad girl in this shoot (for Perks of Being A Wallflower)] felt a bit uncomfortable and awkward, it didn?t come naturally at all."

Muse frontman Matt Bellamy takes his songs seriously when performing them but admits he can struggle to relate to the lyrics when listening back to his records.

Matt Bellamy only "believes" his songs when he is performing them.

The Muse singer is known for his fascination with space and other-worldly themes but admits he struggles to relate to his own lyrics when listening to the band's music.

He said: "I love the music. A lot of people have picked up on some of it being tongue-in-cheek.

But, I have to say, sometimes when I listen to our music or I hear it in the distance, I go, 'Is that actually the band I'm in?'

"But to me it's only tongue-in-cheek when I'm listening to it. When I'm playing it, I believe it man. I'm in there. I mean, 'Knights of Cydonia', I'm going with it into these strange emotions. So I can only assume people get that feeling too.

"But, I have to say, sometimes when I listen to our music or I hear it in the distance, I go, 'Is that actually the band I'm in?' "

Muse are currently preparing for their headline slot at the Reading and Leeds festivals in August, where they will play their 2001album 'Origin of Symmetry' in its entirety, but the group admit it isn't sounding as good as they hoped in rehearsals.

Bassist Chris Wolstenholme told Q magazine: "It's alright. We ran through 'Hyper Music' for the first time in seven years. It sounded like a school band cover of 'Hyper Music' to be honest."

Have Evan Rachel Wood & Jamie Bell Rekindled Their Romance?

Actress Evan Rachel Wood has reportedly rekindled her romance with ex-boyfriend Jamie Bell, five years after they parted ways. Wood dated Bell in 2006 after they played onscreen lovers in the music video for Green Day?s track Wake Me Up When September Ends.

And they even got matching tattoos to declare their love for each other, with Wood saying at the time, ?We had matching tattoos because we knew our love would last for ever. Trouble is, it didn?t, things happened, we split. But I don?t regret the tattoo. It reminds me of a great, great period in my life.?

Wood then started an on/off relationship with shock rocker Marilyn Manson, who she split from for good last year. And now it seems the actress has found love again with the Billy Elliot star, after the pair was spotted walking hand-in-hand on a romantic day out in New York on Thursday.

Wood and Bell were snapped strolling through Manhattan with their arms around each other, wearing matching trilby hats.

OMG, you guys! It was the finale!

The Voice picked who became?well, "the Voice"?winner of $100,000 and a contract with Universal Records.

Ballin'!

So who took it all?!

MORE: The Voice: Four Finalists Fight to Become the Last One Singing

Of course they didn't announce it right off the bat, they had an hour to fill?duh!

So to take up some time, the four finalists Dia Frampton, Javier Colon, Beverly McClellan and Vicci Martinez each sang a duet with one of their favorite artists.

Jealous!

Before hitting the stage with their idol, each contestant had a "look-back" at their journey, which of course got us a little teary (we're not ashamed).

But then it was showtime!

Pat Monahan from Train joined up with Vicci from Cee Lo Green's team and sang "Drops of Jupiter." Cee Lo said it best when he claimed that Vicci reminded him of other artists, but there's no one that reminded him of Vicci because she's so unique.

From Adam Levine's team, Javier joined the stage with the legendary Stevie Nicks and performed "Changes." Levine tugged at our heart strings when he called Javier his hero.

Beverly from Christina Aguilera's team linked up with One Republic's Ryan Tedder and rocked out to "Good Life." Christina commended Beverly and then surprised the other coaches with a public thank-you for being the big brothers she'd never had. Awww!

Lastly, Dia represented Blake Shelton's team when she sang a duet to "House That Built Me," with her coach's wife, Miranda Lambert.

MORE: The Voice Contestants Make Us Cry as Half Are Sent Home

Of course, Papa Shelton made us get a tad emotional as he struggled to say that seeing Dia on stage with his wife made it clear that the contestant was family to him, and that was why he acted the way he did around her.

Double awww!

But enough heart to heart, who won the friggin' show?! We found out that it was a really close race, with the top two contestants only two percent away from each other in votes.

Who were they? Dia and Javier!

But when it came down to the wire, only one could take the title.

Congratulations to the first winner of The Voice, Javier Colon!

Yes, we cried.

Do you agree with America's choice? Sad that The Voice is over so soon? Sound off in the comments!

Wacky West weather means snow on the 4th of July

A summer that looks a whole lot more like winter has travelers across the West scrambling to revise their Fourth of July itineraries - or at least their packing lists.

Ski poles are replacing fishing poles at popular hiking and camping spots where late-winter snowstorms blanketed Western mountains from the Rockies to the Sierra Nevada.

"A lot of people are calling it the trifecta day, where they're going to ski in the morning, mountain bike in the afternoon, maybe do something on the lake in the evening," said Julie Mauer, a spokeswoman at Sierra ski resort Squaw Valley, which saw record-breaking snowfall this season. The resort plans to open four ski lifts on the upper mountain and promises free commemorative July 4 t-shirts to the first 5,000 guests who show up on Monday.

At Crystal Mountain, south of Seattle, spokeswoman Justus Harris said she expected to see "a lot of bikini tops" out on the slopes. The National Weather Service is predicting mostly sunny skies on the mountain on July 4, with a high near 59 degrees. The mountain hasn't been open this late in the year since 1999.

An unseasonably strong low-pressure system has brought above-average rainfall to California's Central Valley and the Sierra earlier this week, and the National Weather Service on Thursday issued a flood warning for

much of the region, cautioning that warming temperatures leading into the weekend will accelerate snowmelt and cause rising water levels in rivers and streams.

At lower elevations, the spring thaw has led to surging waterways, turning normally easy crossings perilous and raising flood concerns.

While ski resorts are hoping to entice visitors with the prospect of dense snow combined with mild temperatures, campers and hikers are less enthusiastic about the wacky weather. Popular campgrounds at Yosemite National Park are closed and visitors have been warned they may encounter snow, high water on roads and slippery mud. Flood warnings are in place in some areas.

Fresno County resident Jan Woertendyke, 56, and her fiance - both experienced hikers - were planning a weekend backpacking excursion to Yosemite's Ostrander Lake, which sits at about 8,500 feet. But after seeing ominous-looking photos posted online by other hikers last week, the couple decided to cancel their trip.

"I can't see hiking uphill with a 30-pound pack on my back on a solid trail of snow the last mile," said Woertendyke, of Clovis.

It's also changed plans for the first time in six years for fellow Clovis resident Jason Telaro, who makes an annual three-day backpacking trip through the rugged Yosemite National Park backcountry to celebrate his July 4 birthday.

"I'm also an avid skier, so when I noticed all the snowfall this year, I anticipated the problems a little bit. But definitely not for the Fourth of July weekend," said Telaro, who now plans a one-day camping trip in a less treacherous wilderness area.

Several of Yosemite's popular high-country campgrounds, cabins and other amenities remain closed. Although all trails are open, park officials say visitors should be prepared to encounter snow, high water crossings and slippery mud.

At Stanislaus National Forest, located primarily in Tuolumne County adjacent to the northwestern portion of Yosemite, much of the terrain above 8,000 feet remains blanketed in snow, while high- and fast-running creeks and overflowing rivers are blocking access to some backcountry areas.

Further north, snowplow crews at Lassen Volcanic National Park recently crested the main park road's summit at 8,500 feet, pushing through 20 feet of snow. They're still clearing 15 feet of snow as they try to reopen State Highway 89 by July 8, park spokeswoman Karen Haner said. Some of the most popular hiking trails are buried and aren't expected to reopen for weeks.

Weekend visitors to the northeastern California park are being encouraged to bring special equipment if they plan to attempt to climb the nearly 10,500-foot Mount Lassen.

"It will be a snow excursion - it wouldn't be like hiking on a trail. People will have to have crampons and an ice ax," Haner said.

Meanwhile, snow-sport enthusiasts will have their pick of several popular Western destinations.

California's Alpine Meadows will be open Independence Day weekend for the first time since 1995, and for just the second time in its 50-year history, said spokeswoman Rachael Woods.

At Snowbird in Utah, where upper runs have remained open every weekend, resort operators are even considering trying to extend the season through July 24 for Pioneer Day, a Utah state holiday that generally sees a lot of travel, said spokeswoman Emily Moench.

"I keep telling people how good the skiing still is, which they find unbelievable until they actually get up here," she said.
