'Insidious': It's tedious and not ominous

By Claudia Puig, USA TODAY

By now, we've heard it's not the house that's haunted in Insidious. But it might as well be, for how familiar this tale of creepy goings-on and malevolent beings feels.

  • It's coming from inside the house: Rose Byrne is forced to confront supernatural goings-on in her new home.

It's coming from inside the house: Rose Byrne is forced to confront supernatural goings-on in her new home.

There's not much that's insidious, or subtle, here. A prolonged scene involving an unnerving high-pitched burglar alarm does get under our skin. But it's far more annoying than frightening.

Billed as a pairing of the makers of Saw and Paranormal Activity, it seems like a defanged version of both. At best, it's half a good scary movie.

Whereas Paranormal made the most innocuous things seems terrifying and Saw was uniquely gruesome, Insidious follows a predictable, plodding path.

The story feels like a one-off of Amityville Horror, with a touch of Poltergeist. Josh (Patrick Wilson), Renai (Rose Byrne) and their three children have just moved into a gorgeous Craftsman-style home. But before they even unpack, bizarre things start happening. Initially, they're only off-putting: thumps, creaky doors and once-shelved books appearing in a heap on the ground. The dread mounts when their son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) inexplicably falls into a coma overnight.

Renai is increasingly rattled by the house's spooky vibe. One moment that does effectively recall Paranormal Activity is when she hears eerie whisperings on the baby monitor.

* * out of four

Stars: Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Lin Shaye, Barbara Hershey
Director: James Wan
Distributor: FilmDistrict
Rating: PG-13 for thematic material, violence, terror, frightening images and brief, strong language
Running time: 1 hour, 42 minutes
Opens Friday nationwide

Josh, a teacher, begins to keep long hours alone at school, grading papers. Strangely, an increasingly terrified Renai doesn't think to ask him to come home and grade his papers there. Not that it would do much good. Ever the skeptic, Josh simply dismisses even the supernatural events he personally witnesses.

When they move, the sinister events follow them. Renai follows the template when supernatural weirdness prevails: She calls in a priest. He either doesn't believe her wacky tale or isn't a trained exorcist. Either way, the scene seems to exist only as a setup for a lame joke by Josh.

Josh's mother (Barbara Hershey) suggests a nerdy ghost-busting trio, led by the paranormally gifted Elise (Lin Shaye). That's when the movie truly goes off the rails. A high-tech sance comes off like a gaudier, less-inventive version of Drag Me to Hell. Josh astrally projects to retrieve his comatose son lost in a netherworld called "The Further," which resembles a low-rent Fellini funhouse.

Repetitive images lacking any fear factor add to the tedium. Insidious is more likely to induce yawns than screams.

A 10-Year-Old Singer Covers Adele's 'Someone Like You'

10-Year-Old Singer Covers Adele's 'Someone Like You'YouTube's not just for cat videos anymore -- the site has earned some music industry cred in recent years for launching the careers of pint-sized greats like Justin Bieber and Greyson Chance.

Connie Talbot isn't all that different from her predecessors, except for the fact that when Chance and Bieber were her age, they were playing with toys while Talbot was playing with her gold records.

Talbot, who is signed by music label Rainbow Recording Company, was first introduced to the public during a stint on 'Britain's Got Talent' in 2007, where the singer was runner-up to winner Paul Potts.

A collection of online videos captures the 10-year-old performing covers of hits from Katy Perry's 'Firework' to Bruno Mars' 'Grenade.' But the latest addition to Talbot's YouTube channel is what could separate her from the rest of video service's stars.

Talbot tackles Adele's love-stricken ballad 'Someone Like You' with such grace that she makes the entire performance look effortless.

While she may look like your average elementary school student performing for her parents, once the tiny singer opens her mouth, her enormous talent is evident.

Here's to hoping for a duet!

Hendricks Scared Of Losing 'Dream' Mad Men Job

26 minutes ago | WENN | See recent WENN news

Mad Men star Christina Hendricks is urging TV bosses to settle their dispute over the hit TV show because she's terrified of losing her "dream job".

The retro drama has been thrown into turmoil in recent weeks as bosses at the TV network behind the show, AMC, and the Lionsgate studio which makes the series, have failed to agree on a deal to bring the programme back to the small screen.

The extended negotiations have already led to lengthy production delays and pushed the next season back until at least 2012.

Hendricks has now spoken out about the drama, insisting she hopes the two sides reach an agreement soon.

She tells Hollyscoop.com, "It's my dream job and I love working there, so I can't wait to go back to work fast and I hope it all just gets settled soon. Because we're all excited to go back."

El Monte police stepping up patrols to reduce distracted driving

EL MONTE - The El Monte Police Department will conduct additional patrols in much of April in an attempt to reduce distracted driving.

The additional patrols will be conducted between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. from Monday through April 17 and 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. from April 18-30, said El Monte Police Department Chief Thomas Armstrong.

"Cell phone use and texting while driving is such a serious concern that we are putting officers on the road to enforce zero tolerance. Is that text message or cell phone call really worth $159," Armstrong said referring to the minimum fine for the first offense.

Using a hand-held device while driving makes an accident four times more likely, Armstrong said.

Casey Abrams: Worthy of a Save?

The pressure was on Casey Abrams last night.

Following his shocking save on Thursday, the American Idol contestant had to prove the judges made the right choice. Did he succeed?

We think so. Abrams toned down some of his typical antics and performed a tender cover of "Your Song." Randy went a little overboard with his praise, likely in an effort to justify the panel's decision to keep Casey around. This was a perfectly solid rendition.

But was it really "absolutely brilliant," as the Dawg decreed?

Britney Spears Sued For Fragrance Fraud

Britney Spears is being sued by her former business partners for breach of contract, fraud and deceit, and it all stems from her signature scent.

The pop singer was slapped with a $10 million lawsuit because of Radiance and a multi-million branding deal with beauty giant Elizabeth Arden.

Britney and father Jamie are accused of being "sneaky and underhanded" in moves to cut Brand Sense Partner, LLC., out of a licensing pact.

Bit Bit Live

Another week, another legal saga for Britney Spears.

"Britney secretly made a deal with Elizabeth Arden in an underhanded effort to circumvent and evade obligations to Brand Sense," the suit states.

"Effectively, Britney improperly and illegally cut Brand Sense out of the deal." Brand Sense accuses Britney of "concealment and evasive actions."

We have no idea who's in the right and who's in the wrong here, but we strongly suggest she name her next scent Poo Cocktail. So seductive.

Michael Giltz: Theater: Daniel Radcliffe "Succeeds" On Broadway

HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING *** out of ****
AL HIRSCHFELD THEATRE

Actor Daniel Radcliffe will turn 22 during his run in the new revival of How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (on July 23, to be exact). If he wanted to, he could probably turn 23 and still be in it -- the show fits him like a glove and audiences are eating it up. Heck, they cheered the chorus girls the night I caught it and you just know an audience is having fun when they start applauding loudly even before the movie and TV stars appear for their curtain call.

For the record, Radcliffe is trying and does succeed pretty darn well -- and without grading him on a curve. He moves well and his adequate voice is okay enough for the not-so-vocally demanding role of that corporate schemer J. Pierpont Finch. ("F-I-N-C-H," as he so helpfully makes clear to all and sundry.) Matthew Broderick was the last person to lead a revival of the show on Broadway and they pair off well together.

Neither is a born singer but the great score by Frank Loesser is easy on the lead. Both have charm to spare (something Radcliffe reveals here more than ever before) and an easy complicity. Neither is terribly tall, which is especially useful for our hero now; he may be running rings around the competition as he rises swiftly to the top of the World Wide Widget company ("www" which gives the whole show a modern flair), but he's also small. Even though he's smarter than anyone else, you can't help feeling he's an underdog.

The show -- rather sexless in an interesting way - feels as modern as ever, despite silly concerns about songs like "A Secretary is Not A Toy." Looking out for yourself, seeing a company as a stepping stone rather than a home, seeing your coworkers as competitors instead of friends, being so focused on career you don't even bother with a personal life -- sounds familiar, doesn't it?

It helps when the tale of a window washer rushing up the ladder of success is filled with fun numbers like 'Coffee Break" and "Rosemary" (in which our hero unexpectedly discovers romance, only to soon put it aside while he leaps ever higher).

Radcliffe's Broadway debut was in Equus, in which he showed a certain amount of stage presence despite being cast as a rough, country lad, a role he most certainly was not suited for. He's grown tremendously here and owns the stage rather charmingly, right down to mouthing "cheers" during his curtain call.

Two other crucial roles don't score highly. Rose Hemingway is okay as the secretary who loves him and longs to keep his dinner warm (in New Rochelle!), but certainly doesn't put her stamp on the role or ever get beyond a vague niceness. Worse, the main foil for Finch is supposed to be the boss's nephew, Bud Frump. He's the corporate climber we're supposed to dislike -- our hero gets by on his wits and sucking up (cleverly) while Bud just complains to his mother, who is the sister of his boss's wife. But Christopher J. Hanke fails to nail almost any of the humor in his part. He's a handsome fellow but his voice is so-so and his delivery poor. Lines that should kill just sort of peter out, though he has a good physical command of his body and does well in the dancing.

The other key roles are much better. Emmy winner John Larroquette makes his Broadway debut in solid form as the boss, J.B. Biggley. Without overplaying it, he milks every laugh out of every line he's given. Director and choreographer Rob Ashford even makes smart use of Larroquete's height compared to Radcliffe in the rousing Act One tune "Grand Old Ivy." His mistress is played by Tammy Blanchard, who also shows wise restraint in a part that can be pure caricature. Their romantic number together -- "Love From A Heart Of Gold" -- gets by purely on the chemistry of the two. As a bonus of sorts, Larroquette's voice is so modest it makes even Radcliffe's singing seem robust.

MIchael Park (who was exceptional in this season's excellent new play Middletown) does strong work as a corporate exec and deserves bigger roles in the future. And Ellen Harvey has a blast as Miss Jones, especially with her warbling on "Brotherhood Of Man" (inserted perhaps to give some vocal spark to the big dance finale in which Radcliffe shined as a hoofer but obviously could not belt out over that chorus).

I keep coming back to the idea that the best actors didn't overplay roles that can be rather broad. Perhaps it has to do with the sleek, Sixties-mod look of the sets by Derek McLane and excellent lighting by Howell Binkley for this How To Succeed. They create a vivid, genuine corporate world, as opposed to what I remember as a more cartoonish feel for the Broderick revival. (Which I also enjoyed.) It has the feel I imagine the new musical Catch Me If You Can will be shooting for.

Ashford's strong staging and choreography are filled with grace notes and clever touches, from the mailroom clerks passing around packages with their feet to the hilarious "Grand Old Ivy" (in which Radcliffe pantomimes playing football and is carried backwards in slow motion to amusing effect) to that rousing climax "Brotherhood Of Man," in which our hero really delivers on his toes, thanks to very clever moves that show him off to the best possible effect.

And yet, the dancing overall was solid but not spectacular. So how can a show where the male lead isn't really a singer and the female lead didn't wow and the main villain underwhelmed get three stars? Hey, that's the beauty of live theater. A great show delivering on the technical front with panache and boasting one of the more tuneful scores in Broadway history can be a lot of fun, especially with a charismatic lead, powerhouse vocals or not.

And if Radcliffe chooses his next role wisely -- a romantic comedy or flat-out farce, I think -- he will continue to grow as an actor and keep packing them in. Just like How To Succeed surely will. And when he steps away from the show (as inevitably he will) and they need to find a replacement, might I suggest Neil Patrick Harris?

Courteney Cox & Josh Hopkins: Just Friends?

Using her free time to take a much-needed vacation, Courteney Cox has been living the good life on the beaches of St Barts.

The ?Cougar Town? beauty showed off her rockin' bikini bod as she and daughter, Coco, dodged some waves and laid on the shoreline while joined by "Cougar Town" co-star Josh Hopkins.

While they certainly have looked to be enjoying one another's company, Cox and Hopkins still claim that they have a "platonic" situation.

Of the situation, a rep released a statement reading: "The relationship is strictly platonic and they are away with a group of friends on vacation."

The Voice Preview: Blind Audition Clips

In the first promo for NBC's The Voice, we simply heard all about how this singing competition would be different from American Idol. Specifically: it will feature blind auditions.

That's right, judges Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, Cee Lo Green, and Adam Levine won't actually see contestants that initially try out for the new series, which premieres on April 26. How will this gimmick work? The network gives us an idea below.

In this trailer, we see the panel will utilize their chairs, their ears for talent and their big red buttons:

Candy Spelling Says Her Book Won't Trash Tori, Calls Reports 'Hurtful'

EXCLUSIVE: Candy Spelling is slapping down reports that say the book she's shopping around is going to dish about her often rocky relationship with daughter Tori, telling me 'Golden Girl, Silver Lining' will be about her journey from pampered super-rich housewife to finding her own path once she became a widow.

"It's simply not true," Candy tells me about reports that say her book will throw Tori under the bus. "It's about me starting to work for the first time after I turned 60 and my husband passed away."

Candy tells me she hasn't had a job -- outside of being a homemaker -- since she was 15, making $1.50 an hour at a candy store. Since her TV producer husband Aaron died in 2006, she looked for the perfect gig and found it on Broadway, where she is producing the sure-fire hit 'How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,' starring Daniel Radcliffe.

"Everyone in my family has done something," she explains. "My husband Aaron was the most prolific TV producer of all time, and my daughter is the queen of reality shows. So I thought I would really like to dabble in producing musicals and then I got so hooked."

With a net worth estimated to be more than $500 million, Candy tells me she doesn't have to work but is doing it because she really enjoys it.

"When I married Aaron I had no idea he would be this successful. I was in love with the man, not the money. We lived in a tiny house," she said. And on the crowd of haters rooting for a feud between her and Tori?

"It's very hurtful when people say mean things about my daughter and me," she said. "There was a time when things were rocky between us, and we worked that out, and I'm going to be on her reality show."

Although, Candy makes it clear she's not a fan of all reality shows, saying, "I don't like those 'Housewives' shows. They all get mean and bitchy, and I get my feelings hurt very easily."

I guess that means you can scrap any future attempts to get Candy to join the 'Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,' Andy Cohen!

Cougar beach?

Courteney Cox and 6-year-old daughter Coco were seen Tuesday on the Caribbean sands with Cox's Cougar Town costar Josh Hopkins.

It's the latest sighting of Cox, 46, with Hopkins, 40, since her separation last October from husband David Arquette ? they were spotted in Hawaii filming a scene in the pool and in the surf, but in those instances they were on location for the show.

This time, the getaway isn't work-related, but their rep tells PEOPLE romance is playing no role.

"The relationship is strictly platonic and they are away with a group of friends on vacation," the rep says.

Bravo Renews Bethenny, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Top Chef Just Desserts

Bravo shows are like Bedazzled cotton candy: No substance, so so so much style and totally addictive. (And yes, OK, fine, the Top Chef franchise has some substance.)

The network just threw its advertisers a party and gave us fans a gift bag of treats. In addition to a slew of new series annoucements, the network has ordered new seasons ofBethenny Ever After (yay!), Tabatha's Salon Takeover, Top Chef Just Desserts (yay!), The Real Housewives of Atlanta and The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (quintuple yay!).

Plus, which Project Runway and Rachel Zoe Projectpersonalities just got spinoffs?

WANT MORE? Follow @JenniferArrow on Twitter

Project Runway drag-queen-dress designer Chris Marchis getting his own show, called Mad Fashion, and it's about time. Such a good idea to give this guy his own show; he is ridiculously funny and exactly the kind of guy you want to spend an hour with while you're decompressing from a long day at work. The other star getting his own spotlight on Bravo is Rachel Zoe's former assistant Brad Goreski, soon to be the lead of It's a Brad Brad World. Mmm?do you love or hate this guy? Will he be a good reality show star?

Meanwhile, the network ordered a bunch of new series and franchise extensions. Namely: The salon takeover franchise starring Tabatha Coffey expands to include other small businesses in Tabatha Takes Over; Roble and Co. is a new catering-centric reality series, starring Chef Roble Ali of New York City; Ready to Wear is about a high-end consignment shop in NYC; Project Soulmate is Millionaire Matchmaker in Manhattan, with Lori Zaslow as the leading yenta; Million Dollar Listing NY is a franchise extension to the Big Apple; Miss Advised (awful title!) is about three single relationship experts having to sometimes take their own medicine; The Therapists is about shrinks having to sometimes have to take their own medicine; and Interior Therapy with Jeff Lewis is about remodeling your house and your state of mind simultaneously;

Bravo is also introducing Most Eligible: Dallas, which is about socialites (of both genders) dating in the big city. So, will this be the pioneer edition of a younger version of Housewives franchise, or is it just another dating show?

What's your favorite Bravo series? Hit the comments with your picks!

Homeless Man Exploits Lindsay Lohan

Usually Lindsay Lohan is the one begging for attention -- but a homeless man in Huntington Beach, CA turned the tables on the troubled star yesterday ... all in an effort to make a well-deserved buck.

0329_lindsay_lohan_guy_Jessica-De-Arman_2The man -- who's low on cash-flow but has a rich sense of humor -- was spotted yesterday near the 405 Freeway in Huntington Beach, CA ... holding up a sign that said, "Slept with Lindsay Lohan Need Help."

Lohan's people had no comment.

Kevin Federline to be a dad for the fifth time

Kevin Federline will be a fifth-time dad, while Victoria Prince will be a mom for the first time.

Kevin Federline will be a fifth-time dad, while Victoria Prince will be a mom for the first time.

Kevin Federline is taking on a familiar role: dad.

The ex-husband of Britney Spears is expecting a baby with girlfriend Victoria Prince, People.com reports.

Pregnancy rumors spread like wildfire on Monday when photos taken over the weekend show Prince with a noticeably rounder belly.

This will be the fifth child for the former backup dancer-turned-rapper-turned-reality star, who was last seen trying to lose weight last year on VH1's "Celebrity Fit Club."

A LOOK AT HOLLYWOOD'S CUTEST KIDS

Federline, 33, is already father to son Sean Preston, 5, and Jayden, 4, with Spears; and daughter Kori, 8, and son Kaleb, 6 with ex-girlfriend Shar Jackson.

This will be the first child for 28-year-old Prince, a former professional volleyball player from Washington who has been dating Federline since late 2008.

George Clooney Named Witness in Prostitution Trial of Italian Prime Minister

George Clooney was named as a witness in the high-profile prostitution trial of Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi on Tuesday, the Associated Press reports. But no one was as surprised by the news as Clooney himself.

"It seems odd since I've only met Berlusconi once and that was in an attempt to get aid into Darfur," he told the Associated Press in a statement.

Berlusconi is accused of paying a 17-year-old Moroccan girl called Ruby for sex and then trying to cover it up after the fact. He has denied the charges and his trial will begin on April 6.

Clooney, who owns a villa on Lake Como, Italy, was on the list of witnesses submitted to the court by Berlusconi's defense lawyers. The Academy Award-winning actor is reportedly on the list because Ruby claims she saw the star and his Italian girlfriend, Elisabetta Canalis, at one of Berlusconi's parties. Earlier this year, Canalis denied she and Clooney had ever attended a party thrown by Berlusconi.

Denise Richards Increases Security, In Fear of Charlie Sheen

When Charlie Sheen is spewing nonsense about warlocks and winning, it's easy to laugh along with the unemployed actor. But then it's also important to remember:

He's been accused of, and arrested for, multiple assaults against women. This is a shady individual whose issues go far beyond whatever he puts in his own body and whatever words he uses against Chuck Lorre.

Richards v. Sheen

Denise Richards is constantly aware of this fact, however, which is why sources say the actress has increased security around her and her daughters. She's taken such a step in light of Sheen's recent, hate-filled Tweet that labeled her a "traitor" and a "dog killer."

"Denise and her girls live a simple life," an insider tells Pop Eater. "She wants Sam and Lola to have normal lives, but after the recent threats and verbal attacks, she has increased her security. When you are dealing with a mad man, it's better to be safe than sorry."

While the public is first getting a look at the dangerous side of Sheen, it's one with which Richards has been unfortunately aware for years. Says the source:

"If Charlie is willing to put those evil tweets out in public, you can only imagine what he has called Denise in private... Denise is no longer angry - she's scared."

Does anyone blame her?

Victoria Prince: Knocked Up By K-Fed!

With Britney Spears making her return to the spotlight today, ex-husband Kevin Federline has also found himself back in the news.

Sources tell E! Online that K-Fed's long-term girlfriend, Victoria Prince, is pregnant with the couple's first baby. She's about five months along and the pair is "totally happy" about it, an insider claims.

Victoria and K-Fed

Despite appearances, Victoria Prince - NOT Kevin Federline - is the one reportedly expecting.

If true, this child will be Federline's fifth overall. He has two with Shar Jackson and two sons, Sean and Jaden, with Britney. Most of that clan actually united two weeks ago for a Little League game.

Stocks gain as confidence falls less than feared

In this file photo taken March 17, 2011, traders gather at a post on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. World stocks fell Tuesday, March 29, on more bad news from Japan, where authorities raced to stop a radiation leak from a nuclear power plant damaged in an earthquake nearly three weeks ago. (AP Photo, file)

NEW YORK - Stocks edged higher Tuesday after consumer confidence fell less than some analysts had feared.

Home Depot Inc. rose 2.3 percent, the most of the 30 companies in the Dow Jones industrial average. The retailer said it would buy $1 billion of its own stock with cash from selling bonds.

Amazon Inc. rose 2.4 percent. The online retailer launched two offerings late Monday: Amazon Cloud Drive and Amazon Cloud Player. The first allows users to store music, videos and photos on Amazon's servers. The second lets users play songs uploaded on a computer

Rising gas prices helped drag down consumer confidence in March. The Conference Board said its confidence index dropped more than expected to 63.4 from 72 in February.

The fall comes after five straight months of gains, but some economists had expected the decline to be even worse. Goldman Sachs had forecast a drop to 60 after the University of Michigan confidence survey showed a steep fall last week.

The Conference Board survey also had a surprising result: the index measuring consumers' assessment of current conditions gained from February, putting it at the highest level since November 2008.

"Now, you can't say things are going worse than they were a month ago," said Thomas Simons, money market economist at Jefferies & Co.

The Dow rose 55 points, or 0.5 percent, to 12,252. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 5, or 0.4 percent, to 1,314. The Nasdaq composite rose 18, or 0.6 percent,

to 2,748.

Evidence of higher gas prices hitting household spending showed up Monday in February's report from the Commerce Department. Consumer spending rose, but most of the increase was used to cover rising gas prices.

Rising oil prices have pushed gasoline prices up 25 cents in the past month. The national average for a gallon of gas hit $3.58 Monday. That's the highest price for this time of year.

Stocks started lower after a report showed that home prices fell in 19 of the 20 large U.S. cities tracked by the S&P/Case-Shiller index. Washington was the only city in which prices rose. Prices have fallen 3 percent overall in the past year.

Lennar Corp. fell 3.2 percent on news that housing prices dropped in most major cities even after the homebuilder reported a surprise profit for the latest quarter.

General Electric Co. rose 0.5 percent after announcing plans to buy 90 percent of Converteam, a France-based electrical equipment maker.

Hubble?s New Miracle Camera

Science & Reason on Facebook: tinyurl.com Hubblecast Episode 40: Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) ? Hubble?s New Miracle Camera In early 2009, a team of astronauts visited Hubble to repair the wear and tear of twenty years of operating in a hostile environment ? and to install two new instruments, the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph, and Wide Field Camera 3 ? better known as WFC3. ? Please subscribe to Science & Reason: ? www.youtube.com ? www.youtube.com ? www.youtube.com ? www.youtube.com ? Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) is a combined ultraviolet, visible and infrared camera that dramatically extends Hubble?s ability to image astronomical objects. With these new capabilities, Hubble is still pushing the boundaries of science after two decades in orbit. In episode 30 of the Hubblecast, we saw some of the very first pictures to come back from Wide Field Camera 3, Hubble?s newest and most advanced instrument. Today we?re going to look at some of the science behind these pictures. We?ll find out how this remarkable new camera is helping Hubble to see the invisible, look far back in time and spot objects further away from us than ever before. WFC3 was installed on Hubble in place of WFPC2, the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2, which for many years had been the main workhorse instrument on Hubble. Not only do the two instruments have very similar names, and look virtually identical, the capabilities of WFC3 are also in some respects just a tweaked version of those of its predecessor ?

Foxy Brown -- Kicked Off Cruise After Nail Disaster

Foxy Brown's fingernails have once again landed the singer in hot water -- this time, she was booted off a Royal Caribbean cruise because she flipped out after missing her at-sea manicure appointment ... TMZ has learned.

0810_foxy_brown_EXD_Getty
Passengers on the cruise tell TMZ, Foxy set up a nail appointment on the cruise ship last Monday -- a day after the cruise took off -- and showed up three hours late.

We're told the people at the salon couldn't accommodate her when she rolled around -- and Foxy went completely ballistic.

According to sources, security removed her from the salon and sent her back to her room -- where she remained under supervision until Wednesday ... when the ship dropped anchor somewhere in the Cayman Islands ... and authorities kicked her off.

We're told Foxy -- who performed on board the day before the incident -- was then escorted to an airport and flown home. Royal Caribbean had no comment. Attempts to reach Foxy were unsuccessful.

Brown has a storied history when it comes to cosmetics -- in 2004, she faced assault charges for allegedly beating up two nail salon employees ... and again in 2007 after allegedly beating up a beauty store employee.

Inge Geerdens, Founder of CVWarehouse, Belgium: Play Like the Boys for Venture Success

Pemo Theodore, a Startup Coach & Australian origin online entrepreneur video interviews venture capitalists & women entrepreneurs on the shortfall in funding for women @EZebis: Winning theVenture Game for Women.

This interview is with Inge Geerdens, Founder CVWarehouse. CVWarehouse.com is an e-recruitment platform that is linked to the website of companies. She is also Founding Partner at Your Next Move & Ambassadrice at Executive Research. You can find Inge on her blog.

Pemo: Could you tell me briefly about your past history in sourcing venture capital?

Inge: I looked for money in 2006 to start up my company CVWarehouse & I raised Eur1m in 2007. I bought back my shares in 2008.

Pemo: Wow good work

Inge: And I?m preparing for a next round of vcs in 2011.

Pemo: Very good & did you source that in Europe, obviously if it was in Euros? in your own country, Belgium?

Inge: Yes I have contact with vcs within Europe & I raised money in Belgium.

Pemo: Fantastic, great!

Pemo: What personal lessons being a woman have you taken out of your successes &/or failures in that regard?

Inge: I can only speak about Europe but it surprises me a little that women are looked at differently in this case.

I think I got some very strange questions. But I also think I got huge visibility as I was the only woman.

Pemo: So it had its advantages & disadvantages. And you were successful which says a lot for you.

Pemo: What attitudes towards you being female have you noted from venture capitalists when you have been sourcing venture?

Inge: Well they ask more questions about my private life, my kids, how was I going to solve things & they were a little afraid I would spend too much time on my family I guess?

Pemo: Dreadful isn?t it? It is what it is!

Inge: What can I say? It?s not only vcs that ask that question. It?s more in general that I?m confronted with these types of questions as a female entrepreneur.

Pemo: Interesting, interesting, but they wouldn?t ask men those questions would they?

Inge: Well not at all I guess, no, no. They wouldn?t even think about it.

Pemo: What qualities do you think women entrepreneurs need specifically for sourcing venture?

Inge: I?ve been thinking about that question just before your call.

I think we have to act like men. We need to be proud. We need to be very self confident.

We need to have excellent communication & presentation skills. We need to say that we are better. We don?t need to be emotional. So just go to the point, show facts & figures & move further.

Pemo: So copy what the boys do & make sure that we?ve got all our bases covered is what you?d suggest, yeah?

Inge: Well do better than the boys do because we have female disadvantage.

Pemo: Thank you that?s a salient point.

Pemo: Do you think that the challenges that women entrepreneurs/startups have historically faced, mean that we will always be under represented sourcing venture?

Inge: I think a lot of women will always be underrepresented in any business context. Not only but of course also sourcing but already in companies, in boards, in setting up companies, in positions in companies.

Pemo: Have you noticed any changes in the last couple of years since you did your first round in attitudes from the venture community or angel community towards women in Belgium?

Inge: The period you?re talking about is of course the height of 2007 & I?m in the recruitment sector in Europe. So we got a major crisis in 2008 & 2009 so everything closed from a money point of view. I guess it?s not only towards the women. Something that I notice is that the venture capital world in my eyes is very macho, very white male but I guess they?re macho towards other male entrepreneurs as well. So I don?t know, I?m not sure.

Pemo: You are a non-technical CoFounder, do you believe that it is easier for technical women founders to achieve venture funding than non-technical? If so what are your reasons for this?

Inge: I don?t think it?s easier for them. What I did when I was looking for venture, was I really started doing competitions & contests on presentations & pitching.

I realized after my first presentation to venture capitalists that 90% of me raising money would depend on my presentation skills.

Pemo: Very good, so thats a real key point.

Inge: I did a contest & I won a prize in elevator pitching amongst 500 business plans & people pitching all over Europe. I really did it in order to raise money. I think the more technical people are, the harder they find to explain in human words what they exactly do & what they?re looking for. So I think being extrovert, having excellent presentation skills rewards much more in finding money. Because in the end they invest in a person or a team of people & not so much in a company or the technical part of a company.

Pemo: That?s a really good point, thank you.

Pemo: Could you list some of the advantages of gender diversity in a startup? Are there any disadvantages?

Inge: I think the balance would be the best. Not too many women for obvious reasons. Not too many men for obvious reasons. With balance I think women are much more long term. I also think that?s why we have so much difficulties with venture capitalists. Because venture capitalists from the business plan are short term anyway. So men are in the middle, women are very much in that long term strategy keeping an eye on the customers, the company, the employees. So I think having women is an advantage for the long term strategy. Having men is an advantage for the short term strategy because you need both.

Pemo: Fantastic, so what you?re saying is that the balance is the best, most optimum in any startup?

Inge: The real situation is to have the best people. Unfortunately in a startup, you have the people that want to go with you.

Pemo: Exactly, that?s great! Thank you so much for your time today, I so appreciate it. I wish you all the best for your next round.
